This beautifull breed’s origin is descended from two imported Black & Tan Smooth Collies with pointy ears. Around 1860 these Collies were imported by Mr. Elliot and Mr. Allen, owners of ‘Geralda Station’, near Forbes in New South Wales.

The first born litter contained several Black & Tan puppies, and one red. This red dog looked a lot like the Fox. It’s been said the Fox is used during the breeding of the Kelpie.

From victoria came a bitch, a collie mix too, with the name ‘Kelpie’. Kelpie was mated by one of Mr Elliot and Allen’s puppies. One of Kelpie’s children, got called ‘Kelpie’ too, while she looked a lot like her mother.

In 1872, on the age of 12 months, Kelpie (II) was competing in a ‘Sheep dog trail’ in New South Wales. Kelpie won this first trail. After winning this trail, Kelpie’s children, which were called “kelpies”, got very popular. That’s how the name of this breed became Kelpie. Nowadays the official name is Australian Kelpie.

One of the most famous Kelpies in Australia ever, was the ‘smoked blue’ dog Coil. He won Sydney’s 1898th ‘Sheep dog trail’, with maximum of points. After breaking a leg in an accident, he won the trail on three legs, again with a max of points. Two years before, Coil’s mother won the trail.

These dogs are the ancestors of the modern Australian Kelpie. This breed is free from most Hereditary Illness, which we know in most other breeds. Because of Australias hard klimat conditions, the Kelpie is hardened, but in a warm, sensitive way. They’re loyal and eager to learn and willing to work. He can adjust oneself to several circumstances.

Recently the Australian Kelpie is exported to countries like Sweden, Norway, America, New Sealand and many other countries. Unfortunatly the breed isn’t aproved in England yet.
